Auroville Papers offers and introduction to the ancient art of papermaking. Learn how to turn plants and weeds into pulp and make your own paper.
Preparation of the fibers into pulp and formation of the paper sheets will be discovered on the first day of this two-day workshop experience.
On the second day, unleash your creativity with different fibers, flowers, plants or anything you may find of interest to include in your project.
Handmade Paper
This workshop is aimed at introducing participants to the ancient art of paper making. Participants will be instructed on how to prepare plant fibers, make pulp, form sheets, etc. and will try their hands at different stages of the paper making process. This workshop is a learning experience and a creative one for people who like to experiment in a state of calm and sense of well being.
Workshop objectives include instructing participants on how to make paper at home using garden plants and producing a collection of handmade papers which participants will keep. All materials and equipment will be supplied during the workshop and certificates will be presented to participants upon completion.

The workshop covers two days. Mornings from 9:30 to 12:00 and afternoons from 13:30 to 16:00
Day 1: Preparing, cooking, and washing the plant fibers; A short tour of the factory; Learning and practicing sheet forming, couching, and lifting using cotton pulp; Learning how to make an inclusion and create unique artistic papers by placing decorative plants and flowers between layers of pulp; Pressing and drying of finished papers.
Paper Marbling
This two-day workshop is an introduction for artists, painters, paper lovers into the art of making floating designs! Learn briefly about the technical points of marbling paper, how to treat your handmade paper with a mordant, dilute the paints, prepare the base liquid and get hints about how to paint with acrylic colors on water. Produce a collection of lovely hand marbled papers to use in your projects or simply adore for their cloud-like beauty. Participants will be able to set up a small paper marbling studio at home and continue their practice, diving deeper into different techniques of paper marbling if desired, after completing this workshop.

The workshop covers two days. Mornings from 9:30 to 12:00 and afternoons from 13:30 to 16:00
Day 1: Cook and prepare base substance; Treat papers with alum in preparation for applying marbled designs; Prepare paint to be floated on the base substance; Receive instruction on how to introduce paint to the tray, manipulate the surface to change the design, transfer the finished design onto paper, drain off excess liquid and set to dry.
Day 2: Participants will spend the day developing their creative ideas with marbled paper with staff available to advise and help as needed.
Paper Mache
Our two-day workshop is an artistic encounter towards recycling waste paper. Learn to make paper pulp, create your mould and give shape to your ideas using paper-mache. Paper-mache is versatile and can be used to make decorative or functional objects such as, masks, bowls, vases and so on. This workshop will introduce participants to the technical aspects of making objects out of paper-mache so that they may use this technique to create unique works.

Day 1: Make pulp using news paper, paste and water-based colors; Design and make a mould using clay, cardboard, sacks and sand.
Day 2: Form shapes using the paper-mache pulp, learn different methods of manipulating the surface to achieve desired textures, and set for drying.
